Depression: Matter Over Mind
Depression is probably truly understood only by those who have come under its grips. If you're suffering from depression, your symptoms may include low energy, apathy, anxiety, insomnia, alienation, hopelessness, and loss of sex drive. You may feel a combination of these symptoms, accompanied by a pervading sense of loss about not feeling "your normal self." If symptoms are severe, or if you are thinking about suicide, you should immediately seek medical help.
People used to think that coping with depression was just a matter of "pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps." But scientific research now proves there are often simple biochemical causes, that when properly identified, can be treated very successfully.
Although depression can be triggered by a life change such as divorce, death of a loved one, a move, loss of work, or other stresses, it may also surface with no clear external cause. Clinical studies reveal that specific physiological imbalances inside our bodies ultimately play a key role in triggering and sustaining the depression. If these imbalances are not identified and treated, they can trap us in a vicious cycle of mood swings or chronic depression that no amount of sheer "willpower" can overcome.
Finding out how these specific imbalances in your body may be contributing to depression and other mood disorders is the first step toward becoming well again:
