Don't Forget Your Female Hormones
Short-term memory loss is not an uncommon occurrence around menopause. This is mainly due to a drop in hormone levels, especially estrogen and progesterone, that comes with menopause. Sharp changes in the balance of estrogen to progesterone can also produce changes in mental status. Usually these changes in memory and concentration are temporary and are self-correcting.
Recently, researchers at the National Institute of Aging discovered that by maintaining optimal levels of estrogen, postmenopausal women may be able to protect themselves from the memory decline associated with aging. Adequate levels of estrogen, it appears, can protect regions of the brain which are most vulnerable to the loss of brain neurons, regions that play a crucial role in memory.
